Chart showing inventory of the Vilnius Ghetto Library

Vilnius, Lithuania, 1941-1942. Vilna Ghetto Library Inventory

Page from a report, “A Year of Work in the Vilna Ghetto Library, September 15, 1941-September 15, 1942,” showing an inventory of books in the library according to language. Over 30% of the books were written in Yiddish or Hebrew. But there were also sizable amounts of books in Russian and Polish. During the summer of 1942, over 5,000 people visited the library every month. Reading was one way to escape their horrific living conditions and the constant fear of death.
