The Great Depression caused poverty all over the world. Life was worsening for Jews in Poland. Lasar Epstein was a recent immigrant to America. Yet he managed to scrape up $14.00 to send to his brother Shimon Epstein back home in Vilna, Poland on January 3, 1939.
