ID Card of a German-Jewish woman

Darmstadt, Germany, 1939. Identity Documents

The ID card of Gilda Regina Girsch, a 17-year-old Jewish girl from Darmstadt, Germany. The Nazis stamped the identity documents of Jews with the letter “J” for Jude (Jew). They automatically added the middle name “Sara” to Jewish women’s documents and “Israel” to men’s documents. This was part of their campaign to mark and isolate Jews.
