Hygiene checklist of student, Sore Karcewicz
Wysokie Litewskie, Poland, 1927. Hygiene Checklist
A student’s hygiene checklist from Wysokie Litewskie, Poland. Sore Karcewicz had to track behaviors related to personal cleanliness on this Yiddish chart for a few weeks, then get her teacher’s signature (in red). These behaviors included washing her face and hands “with a brush,” brushing her teeth, shining her shoes, and brushing her clothing. She was also required to change or wash her handkerchief, go to bed before 10:30 p.m, and take a bath every day. She only managed to take a bath once a week. That may have been common in a time and place where not every home had running water.
