Ghetto Currency
Circa 1940s.
The Jewish Councils (Judenrat) in the ghettos were ordered to issue currency in place of the money Jews were stripped of. This 50 pfennig is from the Łódź ghetto. Bills like this would have been used from 1940 until the ghetto was liquidated in 1944. In the Łódź ghetto, the currency was often referred to as “chaimki” or “rumki” after the head of the Judenrat, Khayim Mordkhe Rumkowski.
